Hello there, and welcome to Running Sunflower!
My name is Shannon and I’m pleased to meet you!
I’m a native of Virginia, but I currently make my home in New Mexico. They call it the Land of Enchantment for a reason — if you’ve never been, come visit!
As you’ve probably surmised from this blog’s title, I’m a runner. I’ve been at it since 1995, and in that time I’ve run 13 marathons and many more shorter-distance races. I hope to continue for many years to come.
I’m also a wife, a full-time mom to two daughters, and a writer (merrily blogging since 2011).
Predictably, the subjects I write about have evolved over the years. At this stage, I’m writing primarily about motherhood/family, running, the intersection thereof, and pretty much anything else that grabs my attention. Could be a good book, or an adventure, or food, or even our redbone coonhound, Ann — she IS a ridiculously cool dog!
I cherish every minute spent on this corner of the Internet, and I greatly appreciate each and every one of you. That said, I publish as time and energy permit. That’s all I can concretely promise for now.

Thanks for coming by my blog–it’s nice to see another Virginia runner! (even if you are no longer in VA).
Good luck on your upcoming race!
Hey, thanks for ‘liking’ my blog post today. I will check back on yours, too.
Hey, good to find soomene who agrees with me. GMTA.
Hi Shannon! Thanks for reading my blog and liking my posts! It’s great to know that someone reads it! 🙂
Thank you for ‘liking’ my post.
Thanks for reading my blog. How did you locate it? I just started adding tags tonight, I would be interested to know what you searched for and how you came across it.
Hi there! You can search blogs by topic (which I believe are determined by tags), such as running, travel, food, etc. and then save those topics as “favorites.” What I do from time to time is scroll through blogs that fall under my “favorite topics”….which is how I found yours 🙂
Thanks for liking my blog post, too! I was so excited to start reading your blog – the minute I saw the masthead I was thrilled. I grew up in northern NM and my parents still live in Albuquerque. I miss the mountains and feel like I’ve visited home a bit vicariously by reading your posts.
p.s. Sunflowers are my favorite flower. Do you know the poem by Mary Oliver? Here’s
a short video of her reading it – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVfeEySWIss
I love it; thank you! I hadn’t seen or read that before.
Looking forward to following your blog – I love to run as well and am currently located in a town without a running club nor a running buddy, so I am thankful for being able to share a love of running over the internet waves. 🙂
Thanks for the visit! Come again . . . and I’ll try to return the compliment. 🙂
Hey there! I love reading your blog so I tagged you in a little blogger game that I was also tagged in. I hope you’ll play too. 🙂

chris
Thank you! You as well 🙂
Thanks for the like (in fact, I think it’s two different likes) … and there seems to be a theme: running, writing, travel, adventure) I’ll do some skydiving blogs in the summer).
One step at a time,
J
thanks for stopping by my blog and liking my post! i look forward to exploring your site!
Thanks for the like! Your blog looks great!
Hey! I saw that you’re in Albuquerque, NM…In May, I was thinking about doing my New Mexico run…I saw this one “Run for the Zoos” Have you heard or it or run it?? It’s on May 6th and I can send you the link if you want!
The Run for the Zoo would be a good one to pick for a New Mexico run. It’s arguably the city’s most well-known and well-attended running event, and in my opinion (due respect to the Duke City Marathon and the Race for the Cure), its best running event. I’ve done the 10k several times since living here. They also have a 5k and I believe a half-marathon. The 10k course is kind of how I described my long runs — you go out and back, then out and back in the opposite direction before looping back for the finish. The course is in the Rio Grande Valley part of town, so it’s pretty darn flat. The big variable is the weather — it could be warm, or it could be cold ‘n windy. But you do get free admission to the zoo afterwards!
It appears to me that this site doesnt load up on a Motorola Droid. Are other people getting the same problem? I enjoy this site and dont want to have to miss it when Im away from my couretmp.
Hi Shannon, thanks for looking at Storyteller. — Ray
Thanks for liking my blog “Kelley Hospitality” and congrats on the Most Versatile Blog award. I look forward to looking at your posts.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I’m a lazy, lazy blogger, but am totally reenergized today
by the fact that folks actually do read it!
I have a lot to write about.
As for running, it shows up in my writing so much more than I expected.
Stand by for my account of visiting 12 colleges in 6 days with my son next week, and have a great weekend running.
Have a great weekend of runs!
PS my 2 sons and husband are spending 12 days in NM hiking at Philmont Scout Ranch this summer!
Great blog and thank you for your ‘like’ on one of my posts! I thought you would like this article I did on Running & Wine… http://winepugnyc.com/2011/06/20/running-and-wine-a-perfect-pair/
I am a runner myself and of course love wine so thought I would share!
Happy running and cheers!

Thanks for visiting my blog! And I was so happy to see you live in Burque! My BFF lives there and I try to visit every year (I used to live there too). Maybe you know her? She’s Carolyn at http://www.athenafit.com. Any photos of NM are always appreciated! 🙂 Elizabeth
I like that background, Shannon. I’d sure like to run there. Oh, and thanks for stopping by my blog. Stay healthy, and happy running! .CS
Follow me on FB and “like” Balanced Peanut!
As a fellow northern New Mexican with similar interests, I’ll be following your blog. 🙂
Fabulous! Thank you 🙂
Thanks for stopping by my blog. Just read the one about your visitors. So true! My dad usually gives me a day or two notice before he comes to visit. Gives me plenty of time to make our house look presentable. Like you said. He doesn’t say anything, but he certainly sees!
Thanks for stopping by my blog 🙂 Sounds like we both have a love for running!
Hi Shannon, fancy meeting you here! I was just browsing around and came across your blog. Congrats on your latest award nomination. See you around!
Well hello there, and thank you! I love the WordPress universe! And I just took a peek at your blog…holy cow, your cooking sounds incredible.
Hi Shannon, thanks for finding me at Miles4Moms, love your blog, sunflowers being my all time fave, well it got my attention. I”ll have to check back later and catch up on some of your archived posts, loved the Gallup-up post.
Any recommendations on NM races? 1/2 and under, thanks!
Best wishes, may your misadventures continue to be joyful!
Thank you!! And thank you for the blog nomination — might be a bit before I pass the nomination forward, but I will 🙂 As for NM races, I recommend the Run for the Zoo — that’s a big Albuquerque event in early May and it offers races of pretty much every distance. This past year Albuquerque also had a Color Run 5k and Hot Chocolate 15k, which I really enjoyed. And up around Santa Fe, there’s the Santa Fe-to-Buffalo Thunder Half Marathon — lots of downhill and great scenery!
Very nice About page Shannon! Thanks for dropping by my blog. I’m looking forward to reading all your current posts as well as upcoming ones! 🙂
Ahem, tried to post but hit something…
As I was saying, thanks for checking out my blog post “Desperado.” I like your posts, too. Will come back and check out more.
Thanks.
Don
Thanks for stopping by foodforfun for the black bean brownies! I enjoy running as well, though am a fair-weather Minnesota runner which means I hit the gym for classes and machines when winter hits. You would do much better with outdoor workouts in New Mexico:-)

Thanks for stopping by my blog a bit ago. Yours look great. I look forward to reading it.
You live in my old stomping grounds! I graduated from UNM in 1998 (MA and PhD, History). . . some of my favorite people still live there. . .
Thanks for stopping by my blog and liking my post. I look forward to hearing more about your June adventures. What an awesome idea.
I think I’ll pick February if I do this–a most depressing month for me. Why not turn it around, eh?
The month of wind, for y’all! (Well, Feb-April)
FYI: My other blog is all about my New Mexico research. IN fact, I am teaching New Mexico History online for Western New Mexico University 🙂

(It’ll be up in about 24 hours from this comment post)
Thank you!!
My absolute pleasure! I really enjoy reading your blog 🙂
Thanks for stopping by my running blog – Slow Happy Runner.
I really like what you’ve done with your blog and now I have to follow, if for no other reason than to keep up with things ABQ, as I’m moving away for some time. I have noticed the grasshoppers, for sure, mainly while wandering aimlessly between Alameda and Paseo in the Bosque. It’s practically the only time I get inside the city limits any more. 🙂
Hi Shannon! My name is Cameron Von St. James and I had a quick question for you & was wondering if you could please email me when you have a free moment. Thanks! I really hope to hear from you soon and appreciate you taking the time. ☺ cvonstjames AT gmail DOT com

My name is Sandy and I work with the Color Fun Fest 5k coming to Phoenix March 14. We are currently looking to have a select few bloggers come out to our event, free of charge, in exchange for a little blurb on your site.
I’m reaching out to you today because after reading through your blog you’ve got the spunk and spirit we’re looking for..

Hi Running Sunflower! I wanted to reach out again to see if you might have time to speak about the offer I recently spoke about? Color Fun Fest is a simple email away!
Hi, glad I stumbled upon your blog. I am training for a spring marathon and planning a wedding too (this summer)! Sounds like we are in a similar boat! Hope it is all going well 🙂 Rebecca
Cool!! Yup, things are going smoothly enough — hope they are for you as well 🙂
Hi there 🙂 Thank you for stopping by my blog and liking my post. I have only started my blog recently and don’t have much experience but I love writing and always used to send emails to my family and friends describing my trips and adventures. I really like your blog!! I look forward to reading more of your posts. Alicja
So happy I stumbled across your blog…my favorite flower…the sunflower…my favorite hobby…running…my inspiration…Kristin Armstrong…. !
Apologies for the delayed response! I’m so happy that you enjoy the blog 🙂 And I’m envious that you got to meet Kristin Armstrong — she’s such a great inspiration.
glad you liked my cartoon, thanks for stopping by.
ciao…
Thank you for reading my blog post. Congratulations on running your 13th marathon. I hope to run a long trail race at some point, being a bit more disposed to the woods than the roads but I might put a road marathon on my list for the Spring.
I really enjoy your blog! I’ve been an on-again, off-again runner and you are very inspirational. I nominated you for a Blogger Recognition Award. Details are in my most recent post if you’d like to participate!
Thank you!!! And yes, I will participate 🙂
Love your blog!
Thanks for stopping by the blog!! Love the Land of Enchantment :)!
